What You Can Do About the Charleston Shooting
Another heinous shooting has occurred and with it, calls that the Government “do something” to make sure it “never happens again.”
Perhaps our politicians will enact some new law that makes us all safer without eroding our individual rights, but history indicates we should not get our hopes up.
But what about you? Is there anything you can or should do in the face of such atrocity?
I have a few suggestions from a Christian perspective.
It seems clear based on the early evidence that the accused killer was an anti-black racist. But how did he get that way?
He was taught.
We don’t know who taught him or how he was taught, but rest assured he did not come to these beliefs by accident our mere personal conclusion.
If we want to end virulent racism we must teach against it.
What You Can Do
1. Teach your children that racism is wrong.
The scripture is clear on this. All men are created in the image of God. Racism was a problem in Bible times as well. Christians were commanded to treat all with impartiality.
2. Teach Your Children That Murder Is Wrong.
“Thou Shalt Not Kill”
We may think everyone understands and believes this, but murder statistics say otherwise.
3. Attend Church and Study Your Bible Regularly.
We humans are forgetful. We need to hear messages repeated. A lot.
4. Comfort the victims
In the scriptures, Christians are commanded to comfort the afflicted. There is evil in this world that will never be completely eliminated until the end of time. In the meantime, God has left us a support system in the form of the church. If you want to make a difference, send a card or letter of encouragement
